This week, they discuss Richard Sherman, Kevin Durant, the NFL Draft and the MLBs review system. Dave Naylor, TSN 1050 My thumb is down to Seattle Seahawk Richard Sherman for his view that the NFL would not have banned LA Clippers owner Donald Sterling for life because the NFL is "more of a bottom line league." Richard, youre known as a smart guy, so surely you can understand that the NBAs decision to ban Sterling was as driven by its bottom line as it was by its moral convictions. Yes, Adam Silver did the right thing, but the NBA commissioner was also doing the one and only thing that would ensure Sterlings racist words wouldnt carve into the NBAs annual $5 billion revenue pie. Youre right about the NFL being a bottom-line league. But thats precisely the reason Roger Goodell would have done the exact same thing that Adam Silver did. Steve Simmons, Sun Media My thumb is up to Kevin Durant, here on Mothers Day, for making the greatest MVP speech maybe any athlete has ever made. In winning the MVP of the National Basketball Association, Durant made a modest, heartwarming, thoughtful, emotional speech, thanking his mom, bringing tears to his eyes - and with that to the eyes of many, including his mother. Instead of gazing at Mel Kiper Jrs remarkable hair, you could have driven from Halifax to Vancouver and back to Calgary, enjoying this land and making several doughnut stops. Dave Hodge, TSN My thumb is down to one part of baseballs video review system, and one part only - like the NFL Draft - it takes too long. Otherwise, its fine, bad calls by umpires that would otherwise stand are corrected. The absence of childish rants by managers enhances the game. The opportunity for fans in the stands to study the play in question is a real breakthrough, but the length of time it takes for umpires and the MLB war room to make th

Kerry wants to answer your emails at email@example.com. Mr. Fraser: I was watching the Predators vs. Wild game Saturday night and cannot figure out two calls in that game. First of all, Mike Fisher was called for a double minor for hooking. No blood. No injury. Nothing really out of the ordinary other than a minor for hooking. Why was it a double minor? Secondly, the Wilds third goal, while on the power play for the double hooking minor, never crossed the line as far as I can see. Now, at the end you can see Derek Roy pull the puck from Seth Jones shin pad but that doesnt mean the puck crossed the line. I thought Toronto had to see the puck actually cross the line for it to be called a goal. Im so confused! The Preds should have won that game in regulation. Thanks for your insight. Its so fun reading your column. Sincerely, Darin Scott Franklin, TN Darin: The double minor assessed against Mike Fisher resulted from two separate incidents that were deemed to be hooking infractions by the referee(s). A delayed penalty was signaled by referee Justin St. Pierre when Fisher reached with his stick and made light contact between the hands of Nino Niederreiter. The contact did not impede Niederreiters ability to cleanly advance the puck by banking it off the wall to its intended recipient, Wild teammate Ryan Carter. Carter picked up the pass and skated the puck up ice and deep into the Predators end zone. This marginal call (weak) resulted because the referee made the decision to skate toward the opposite side corner away from both Niederreiter and Fisher as they raced for the loose puck. The referee was therefore looking over his shoulder and did not have a clear perspective of the contact and the finish of the play. Had the ref observed the full extent of Fishers action and unimpeded completion of the play by Niederrreiter he should have deemed that no harm - no foul resulted. At the other end of the ice and on the ensuing delay, Fisher clearly hooked Zach Parise to the ice which prevented him from getting to the loose puck. There wasnt any doubt this was a violation of Rule 55 and caused referee Brad Meier to also raise his arm. The two separate hooking calls combined for a double minor assessed against Fisher. A very tight standard was implemented in this game with regard to restraining fouls. A total of eight minor penalties were assessed; all of which were in the restraining category (four for hooking, two for holding, two for interference). Prior to the 2014-15 season, the NHL issued a press release outlining the new rules that were adopted. Video revieww was expanded and modified to allow broader discretion to Hockey Operations to assist the referees in determining the legitimacy of all potential goals (e.ddddddddddddg., to ensure they are good hockey goals). The revised Rule allows Hockey Operations to correct a broader array of situations where video review clearly establishes that a goal or no goal call on the ice has been made in error. Prior to this broader discretion being extended, the situation room personnel required clear visual evidence of the puck crossing the line or being in the net. If a body or hand obstructed the view of the puck, even though it might be logical to deduce that the puck was across the line, an inconclusive verdict was to be rendered from Video Review. All the replays shown during the game broadcast and repeated on the NHL Situation Room Blog do not clearly show the black disc across the line. It was only upon completion of the play that Derek Roy reached across the goal line with his glove and appeared to drag the puck from underneath Seth Jones, who was located inside the net at that point. Unless the Situation Room had an enhanced camera shot along the goal line of the puck resting under Jones pad, it would only seem logical that they deduced the puck was across the line and awarded the goal after Roy reached in and dragged the disk out under the cover of his glove. I have awarded goals (prior to video replay) when I witnessed a goalie had clearly caught the puck across the goal line or made a save with his pad that was inside the net. In cases such as this it was only logical to determine that since the puck was inside the goalies trapper or hit the pad inside the net a goal had resulted. Im okay with the Situation Room utilizing common sense and logic to deduce that a puck had entered the net during the process of play. We saw several examples over the last few seasons where their decision on apparent legitimate goals was restricted because the puck was covered and not visible to them inside the net. My one caution or concern however is when a scrum in the crease area takes place similar to this play. There was considerable pushing, jostling and active stick movement that took place inside the crease, some of which occurred after the play was ruled dead by the referee. Once players separated, it was only at that point that Roy made a move with his glove to l
KELOWNA, B.C. - When Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier didnt make Canadas team for the Sochi Olympics, the ice dancers put themselves on autopilot. It was the low point on a roller-coaster season of crazy highs and heartbreaking lows.We really had to keep moving forward, so we had to go home, take it one day at a time really, because we couldnt really dwell on: Well, that was it, Gilles said. We had to turn our minds off for a little bit.Gilles, from Toronto, and Poirier, from Unionville, Ont., captured a silver medal in ice dance at Skate Canada International on Saturday night, and reflected on how far theyve come from last season. Its so nice to be prepared coming into the Grand Prix season this year, I think there are so many positives coming out of this competition, Poirier said.Their Sochi Olympic campaign got off to a nightmare start when Poirier broke his ankle in May of 2013, a break so severe it took three plates and 13 screws to repair it. He wasnt back on the ice until August, and the two werent able to do full run-throughs of their programs until about three weeks before their Grand Prix debut last November. All the while, the American-born Gilles was nervously waiting for her Canadian citizenship, which she was finally awarded a few weeks before the Olympic trials, making her eligible to compete for Canada in Sochi. It wasnt to be — they would finish fourth at the trials, narrowly missing the team. The first couple days (of Sochi) were hard for me, Gilles said. I couldnt watch the first couple of days. But then once your competitors and your friends are all there, youre like, OK, I have to, because you want to cheer them on. And as hard as it is for you, it still gives you the motivation for the next four years.Gilles and Poirier, who are both 22, didnt have much time to dwell on their disappointment. They were named to the Four Continents team, where they finished second, and then were replacements for Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir on Canadas team for the world championships, where they finished eighth.I think more at the end of the season, it was like: Aw man!, Gilles said on not making the Sochi team. But we did worlds and we had a positive worlds, so that kind of helped the negative part of it.It gave us a lot of momentum going into this season and we saw what we could achieve with training behind us, and weve tried to really embrace that this season, Poirier added.Gilles and Poirier say they already have more training under their belts this season than they did all of last year, and with the changing landscape of ice dancing post-Olympics — both Virtue and Moir and U.S. Olympic champions Meryl Davis and Charlie White are taking the season off to contemplate their futures — are keen to position themselves among the worlds best.We really want to make a big statement this year, said Poirier, who was 14th at the Vancouver Olympics with former partner Vanessa Crone. We really want to show were contenders in this quadrennial, and I think it has to start now. Weve really been pushing ourselves because now is the time where we can really break into the ranks.Looking back on the stresses of last season, especially the nerve-wracking wait for citizenship, Gilles said, I wouldnt change it.Were still hoping for our goal, a medal, for the next one, so were still pushing, she added. The end goal is still the same, Poirier said. The Capitals, who got a goal from John Carlson, have lost four in a row and 11 of 15. Ryan Johansen added a goal and assist, James Wisniewski had a goal, Mark Letestu scored for the fifth time in six games and Jack Johnson had two assists for the Blue Jackets, who had lost their past five meetings with Washington. The victory moved the Blue Jackets to two points out of playoff position with at least one game in hand on every team ahead of them in the Metropolitan Division and wild-card playoff races. Bobrovsky, who came in 5-0-0 with a 1.45 goals-against average and a .954 save percentage in his past five starts, had 26 saves. He stood tall to frustrate the Capitals when the game was still up for grabs. The Capitals came in tied with Pittsburgh for the best power-play unit in the league. But it was the Blue Jackets who scored twice with a man advantage. At 12:08 of the first, Wisniewski one-timed a hard drive from the point that climbed over Philipp Grubauers glove. It was Wisniewskis first power-play goal and fourth tally of the season. In the final minute of the opening period, the Blue Jackets crowded the nets and benefited. Matt Calvert got two whacks at the puck from the crease, Grubauer deflecting each. Defenceman Dmitry Orlov then whiffed on an attempt to clear the puck, with Atkinson hopping on it to lift the puck into the net over a diving Grubauer for his 14th of the season. The Blue Jackets stretched it to 3-0 at 1:44 of the second. R.J. UUmberger carried the puck through the neutral zone and then pulled up in the right corner, sending a pass to the high slot for Johansen.dddddddddddd He slid laterally, waiting for an opening, before wristing a shot for his team-high 18th of the season. Carlsons shot from near the blue line that took a while to get to the net, but it still beat Bobrovsky. It was the defencemans eighth goal of the season. The Blue Jackets killed off two Washington power plays late in the second period, including 18 seconds when the Capitals had a 5 on 3 advantage. Bobrovsky was at his best during this stretch. He twice stymied Russian Olympic teammate Alexander Ovechkin, the NHLs leading scorer with 34 goals, on power-play shots -- once on a one-timer from the left dot and a second time when the Columbus defence broke down and the three-time goal-scoring champ was all alone on a shot that Bobrovsky deflected wide off his catcher. Columbus then added two goals in the third. Letestu wired a wrister inside the near post past Holtby on the power play. Then Atkinson used his skate to settle a hard pass from close rang
PARIS - His ninth French Open title behind him, Rafael Nadal already is thinking ahead to whats next: Wimbledon. Thats why he planned to waste no time and go directly from France to Germany on Monday to get ready to play in a grass-court tuneup tournament. Nadals collection of 14 Grand Slam titles, only three shy of Roger Federers record for men, includes two championships at the All England Club. But the most recent came in 2010, and Nadals past two trips to Wimbledon were quite brief: He lost in the second round in 2012, and the first round in 2013. "I want to try to play well again in Wimbledon," the No. 1-ranked Nadal declared Sunday night after beating No. 2 Novak Djokovic 3-6, 7-5, 6-2, 6-4 in the French Open final to improve to 66-1 at the clay-court tournament. "Im healthy. Thats the most important thing, I feel." The big question about Nadal always was longevity, and whether his 6-foot-1 (1.85-meter), 188-pound (85-kilogram) body would hold up to the constant pounding from his relentless style. Well, now he is the only man with at least one Grand Slam title in 10 consecutive years. And having turned 28 last week, the Spaniard is roughly two months older than Federer was when he got his 14th major. But Nadal was slowed by a bad back during a loss in Januarys Australian Open final. Of more concern: his knees. He decided not to defend his Wimbledon title in 2009, then was sidelined for the last half of 2012 because of a problem with his left knee. "I hope my knee will have the positive feeling on grass, because I feel my knee (is) better than last year in the rest of the surfaces," Nadal said. "Grass always was a little bit harder for me after the injury." This part of the tennis schedule is unforgiving, allowing two weeks to adjust from clay to grass between the French Open and Wimbledon. That changes next year, when a third week gets added. For now, there is time to contemplate story lines that will matter when Wimbledon starts June 23. Djokovic, for example, will try to set aside his latest disappointment in Paris, coming up short again in his bid to complete a career Grand Slam. Djokovic has won six major titles — four at the Australian Open, plus one each at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open — but he has lost in the finals at three of the last four Slams. That includes a defeat at the All England Club a year ago, when Andy Murray became the first British man to win the title since Fred Perry in 1936. So Murray would be the centre of attention, anyway, and he gave everyone another reason to keep a close eye on him by hiring former womens No. 1 Amelie Mauresmo as his new coach. The fourth member of the Big Four, Federer, has lost before the quarterfinals at three of the last four Slams, a stretch that began with a second-round exit at Wimbledon. It will also be worth watching how players who had breakthroughs at the French Open follow that up. Ernests Gulbis, for one. Simona Halep, Andrea Petkovic and Garbine Muguruza, too. And then there are a couple of previous Wimbledon winners who followed very different paths in Paris. Serena Williams was the defending champion at the French Open, and departed in the second round, beaten 6-2, 6-2 by Muguruza. Williams vowed to "go home and work five times as hard to make sure I never lose again." After her last early exit at Roland Garros — in 2012s first round — she went on to win Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. Sharapova, meanwhile, earned a second French Open title and fifth major overall, overcoming a dozen double-faults in her three-set victory over Halep in the final. Now its on to Wimbledon, where Sharapova won her first Grand Slam championship at age 17 in 2004. "Even though you always remember those incredible moments of holding that trophy," Sharapova said, "you got to try to erase that from your mind because you got to create new ones." ___ Howard Fendrich covers tennis for The Associated Press. Not so much the Steelers, who have won their last six games in December. Some things we learned as the Chiefs remained winless in Pittsburgh since 1986:THE STEELERS ARE CLOSERS: Pittsburgh struggled early in the season finishing off opponents, letting lesser opponents stick around until late in games. Thats no longer the case. The Steeelers have dominated at times in the second half of their current three-game run, including a pair of clock-chewing fourth-quarter drives each of the last two weeks.dddddddddddd This time around it was a 12-play, 70-yard march that ended with Shaun Suishams 23-yard field goal that made it 20-9 with 4:04 remaining.ANDY REID IS GONNA GO FOR IT: The Chiefs trailed by four late in the second quarter when they faced fourth-and-inches at the Pittsburgh 12. Rather than a chip-shot field goal, Reid opted to stay aggressive. Charles was stuffed for a short loss. The Steelers ran out the clock and Kansas City never had a better chance to take the lead.Theres a certain mindset here that weve been working with here the whole season, Reid said. When youre put in that situation, you strap it on and go get the thing.HARRISONS RESURGENCE: Steelers linebacker James Harrison was credited with 1 1/2 of Pittsburghs six sacks and was a presence all afternoon. He hardly looked out of shape while spending an extensive amount of time in the Kansas City backfield.James is a monster, Steelers centre Maurkice Pouncey said.THE STREAK CONTINUES: Make it 18 regular season games and counting since a Kansas City wide receiver caught a touchdown pass. The Chiefs had a couple of shots. Dwayne Bowe saw a back-shoulder throw from Smith clang off his hands in the second quarter and Smith missed a wide-open Albert Wilson early in the third quarter.STAYING CLEAN: Pittsburghs improved offensive line kept Kansas Citys front seven from disrupting Roethlisberger too much. Serena Williams likes to make one thing clear: She is never satisfied, no matter how many matches and tournaments she wins. Driven as ever, Williams won plenty this year. She went 78-4 with 11 titles, including at the French Open and U.S. Open, raising her Grand Slam championship total to 17. She compiled a 34-match winning streak. She earned more than $12 million in prize money, a record for womens tennis. In February, she became the oldest No. 1 in WTA rankings history and never left that perch. Thanks to all of that, Williams was honoured Wednesday as The Associated Press 2013 Female Athlete of the Year. Its the third AP award for Williams, following 2002 and 2009. Only two women have been chosen more often as AP Athlete of the Year since the annual awards were first handed out in 1931. "Whenever I lose, I get more determined, and it gives me something more to work toward," Williams told the AP in an interview shortly before the start of the U.S. Open. "I dont get complacent, and I realize I need to work harder and I need to do better and I want to do better — or I wouldnt keep playing this game." The vote by news organizations was about as lopsided as many of Williams matches this season. She received 55 of 96 votes, while Brittney Griner, a two-time AP Player of the Year in college basketball and the No. 1 pick in Aprils WNBA draft, finished second with 14. Swimmer Missy Franklin was next with 10. The Male Athlete of the Year recipient will be announced Thursday. Williams, who grew up in Compton, Calif., and turned 32 in September, produced the finest womens tennis season in years. According to the WTA: — her .951 winning percentage was the best since Steffi Grafs .977 in 1989; — her 11 titles were the most since Martina Hingis 12 in 1997; — her winning streak was the longest since her sister, Venus, had a 35-match run in 2000. "She just continues to be an inspiration to American tennis," said Gordon Smith, the executive director of the U.S. Tennis Association, which runs the U.S. Open. "Her year this year? Unforgettable." By adding a fifth career U.S. Open championship, and a second French Open title, Williams also moved within one Grand Slam trophy of the 18 apiece won by Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert. The record is 24 by Margaret Court. Pretty heady company. Evert is one of the only two women with more AP awards than Williams. Evert won four from 1974-80, while Babe Didrikson collected a record six — one for track in 1932, and five for golf from 1945-54. "Serena already has provided significant contributions to taking our sport to the next level. ... She is chasing records and no doubt will break many records before shes finished," WTA Chairman Stacey Allaster said. "That obviously just brings a lot more attention to our sport." Two particular moments in 2013 stuck out to Allaster. One came at Qatar in February, when Williams cried after assuring herself of returning to No. 1 for the first time since 2010, the year the American needed two operations on her right foot and got blood clots in her lungs. It meant so much to her, from everything she had been through, to be able to be back at the top of the sport, a sport that she does truly love," Allaster said. The second moment came during Wimbledon, when Williams joined other women who have been ranked No. 1 at a celebration of the WTAs 40th anniversary. "It was an opportunity to see her in a leadership position. ... She did a remarkable job at speaking on behalf of all those great athletes and speaking to future players," Allaster said. PITTSBURGH -- Anthony Rizzos miserable second half perked up with one massive swing of the bat. The first baseman slugged a towering go-ahead, two-run homer off Jason Grilli in the seventh inning and the Chicago Cubs rallied past the Pittsburgh Pirates, 5-4 on Friday night. Rizzo entered the night hitting just .208 since the All-Star break but turned on an 83-mph slider from Grilli and sent it over the seats in right field to snap Pittsburghs four-game winning streak. "Its huge for him," Chicago manager Dale Sveum said. "Hopefully it carries into these last couple of weeks." Brian Bogusevic went 3 for 4 with his fifth homer of the season for Chicago. Dioneer Navarro added two hits as the Cubs blunted Pittsburghs momentum as the Pirates chase their first playoff berth in 21 years. Carlos Villanueva (6-8) picked up the win in relief. Kevin Gregg collected his 32nd save when centre fielder Ryan Sweeney tracked down Neil Walkers fly ball in front of the wall in the ninth. Pedro Alvarez, Russell Martin and Garrett Jones hit consecutive solo home runs in the fourth for Pittsburgh. Andrew McCutchen went 2 for 4, but the Pirates lost for just the fourth time in 65 games when leading after six innings this season when Grilli (0-2) faltered. Grilli, an All-Star after racking up 29 saves in the first half of the season, is still working his way back from a strained forearm that sidelined him for more than six weeks. Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle moved Grilli into a middle relief role when he was activated off the 15-day disabled list earlier this month. Pitching in his first pressure situation since his return, Grilli entered with the Pirates up a run in the seventh. He nearly got out of the inning clean, but Luis Valbuena walked on a borderline 3-2 pitch. Rizzo followed taking a pitch heading for his shoetops and nearly sending it into the Allegheny River. "He threw me a slider down and in, a pretty good pitch, and I tried to just put a good swing on the ball and not try to do too much," Rizzo said. Chicagos bullpen made it stand up, silencing Pittsburgh over the final three innings after the Pirates erased an early 3-0 deficit against starter Jake Arrieta. Arrieta breezed through the first three innings and was on his way to doing it in the fourth when Pittsburgh broke out. Alvarez hit a fly ball to the wall in right-centre with two outs that neither centre fielder Ryan Sweeney nor right fielder Nate Schierholtz could corral. The 235-pound Alvarez chugged all the way around the bases for his 33rd -- and by far most taxing -- home run of the season. Alvarez was still catching his breath when Martin followed with a shot 10 rows deep into the stands in left to bring the Pirates within one. Jones tied it seconds later by sending a laser into the seats in centre. It marked the first back-to-back-to-back home runs by the Pirates since Jason Kendall, Brian Giles and Reggie Sanders did it on Aug. 20, 2003, in St. Louis. Pittsburgh eventually took the lead in the sixth when reliever Brooks Raley mishandled a lob from Rizzo at first base, allowing McCutchen to race all the way home from second. The Pirates have risen to the top of the NL Central behind the strength of a bullpen led by the irrepressible Grilli. His velocity, however, has dipped since his comeback and Rizzo took advantage. Still, Hurdle has no plans to take Grilli out of the mix as the Pirates head into the final 15 games of a breakthrough season. "Weve got to keep getting him out there on somewhat of a consistent basis if we want to get him better," Hurdle said. "Hes not going to get better not pitching." Pittsburgh starter Charlie Morton struggled keeping the ball down while trying to bounce back from his worst start since returning from reconstructive surgery on his right elbow in June. Morton allowed three runs in five innings, including a two-run homer by Bogusevic in the fourth and saw a handful of balls caught at the warning track on a night a stiff breeze from the north kept the outfielders busy. NOTES: The Pirates will consult with specialist Dr. James Andrews before figuring out the next step for LHP Wandy Rodriguez, who has been out since June with left forearm tightness. Rodriguez threw 67 pitches in a simulated game on Thursday ... The series continues on Saturday when Pittsburghs Gerrit Cole (7-7, 3.48 ERA) faces Chicagos Scott Baker (0-0, 0.00). GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Lambeau Field faithful will be able to scream Kuuuuuuuuuhn! at the top of their lungs for at least another year. Veteran fullback and local folk hero John Kuhn re-signed with the Green Bay Packers on Thursday, general manager Ted Thompson said in a statement. The one-year deal is expected to be worth just over $1 million, including signing, roster and workout bonuses, agent Kevin Gold said. The 31-year-old Kuhn joined the Packers in 2007 when he was claimed off waivers from Pittsburgh. Hes played in 107 regular-season games with the Packers and hes become a fan favourite. Hes also one of quarterback Aaron Rodgers closest friends on the team. "Great player, great teammate," Rodgers said at the end of the 2013 season. "(Theres) nobody I trust more on the field than John. Hes an exceptional guy, I love playing with him, and Id be really sad if we werent able to walk out of that tunnel together." In 2013, Kuhn carried 10 times for 38 yards and a touchdown, and caught 13 passes for 81 yards in regular-season play. For his eight-year NFL career, Kuhn has only 165 carries for 506 yards and 12 TDs. What role Kuhn will play next season is unclear. Packers coach Mike McCarthy said last week he wants all his running backs to be able to play all three downs. In addition to Kuhn, the Packers have NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Eddie Lacy returning for his second season; James Starks coming back after signing a two-year, $3.dddddddddddd166 million deal ($725,000 guaranteed signing bonus); and DuJuan Harris (knee) and Johnathan Franklin (neck) both expected to return to full health. They also brought back Michael Hill, who spent time on both the 53-man roster and the practice squad last year before signing with Tampa Bay late in the year. The Packers are loaded in the backfield. "Its important for all of them to be three-down players," McCarthy said. "For the way we want to play on offence, we want players to be three-down players, we want to keep our substitution limited. Thats an off-season goal of ours." At this point, no one pass protects for Rodgers like Kuhn, who helped save the Packers season by getting enough of a block on now-teammate Julius Peppers to allow Rodgers to side-step the Chicago defensive end and throw the winning touchdown pass to Randall Cobb in the regular-season finale. That road victory over the Bears sent the Packers into the playoffs. Asked what it takes to be an effective third-down back, McCarthy made it clear what still matters the most. "A-No. 1, it is pass protection. We protect the quarterback," McCart
CLEVELAND -- Upset and frustrated with his defence, Carlos Carrasco made his own error. On Tuesday, he tried to fix it. The Indians right-hander apologized for criticizing two teammates for not making plays behind him during Mondays 2-0 loss to the Kansas City Royals, a setback that pushed Cleveland closer to elimination from the AL playoff race. Carrasco allowed two runs in 7 1-3 innings and afterward said he felt the Indians didnt support him like he needed. "Everything was good. Everything went perfect," Carrasco said to reporters. "We shouldve made those plays right there. That cost me two runs." In the first inning, Indians first baseman Chris Gimenez couldnt handle a hard liner by Eric Hosmer and had it glance off his glove for an RBI single. In the fifth, shortstop Jose Ramirez failed to come up with a grounder as a run scored. Carrasco was asked if he thought both plays should have been made. "Yeah," he said. "I thought they had a pretty good chance of making them, but sometimes we dont make those plays. That can cost us." Poor defence has been an issue all season for the Indians, who lead the majors with 113 errors. Before Tuesdays game, Carrasco issued an apology through the team. "It was a terribly immature and foolish thing to say," he said in a statement emailed to media members. "I know better and I apologize for saying it. I have made some terrible pitches in my career and position players could have questioned what I was doing. No one wants to be criticized when making their best effort. I will apologize to everyone and it wont happen again." Indians manager Terry Francona chalked up Carrascos comments to his competitiveness and disappointment after a tough loss. Francona said he got a text message from Carrasco and the right-hander was waiting for him in his office when he arrived at Progressive Field. "Hes a good kid," Francona said. "To me, thats not the end of the world. Now, the fact he was upset that he said it and he caught it and he didnt try to backtrack and he apologized. And I thought his apology was really sincere." Francona dismissed the idea that Carrascos irritation had been building because of the Indians sometimes shoddy fielding. "The defence behind Carlos has been pretty good," Francona said. "There havent been too many runs scored. I just think it was a big game." The loss was a costly one for the Indians, dropping them 3 1/2 games behind Kansas City for the second wild-card spot with five games left. Gimenez felt bad about not handling Hosmers smash and apologized to Carrasco after the first inning and again following the game. "Theres no excuse. I should have caught the ball," Gimenez said. "It wasnt the easiest line drive -- it had a little tail to it -- but it hit my glove, and I cant help but think I cost us the game." Gimenez said Carrasco approached him in the clubhouse Tuesday and told him he was sorry. Gimenez believes his teammate truly regrets his comments. "Im not mad at him at all," he said. "Its that time of the year. Were in a playoff race and anything like that just seems to get magnified. We didnt score any runs, but Im not mad. I would rather him say something like that than be like, Whatever. "I understand. Hes intense. Hes fired up. Everybody wants to do well. I didnt want to not catch that ball." ST. JOHNS, N.L. -- The St Johns IceCaps got an early preview of what it will take to win in the post-season. Jerome Samson scored the eventual winner as St. Johns defeated the visiting Springfield Falcons 3-1 on Saturday in American Hockey League action. The IceCaps currently sit in fourth spot in the Eastern Conference, four points behind Springfield, while the Falcons are just one of two clubs in the East to have already clinched a playoff spot. "That is the kind of team, the kind of squad, we are going to have to beat in the playoffs down the road," said Samson. "The kind of game we played, to be hanging around 3-0 and almost get the shutout, it shows a lot and builds up our confidence." Samsons goal came on what he described as a "broken play" at 10:55 of the second period and gave St. Johns a two-goal advantage. "I took a shot off a defenceman and then the puck was kind of scrambling and then (Brenden) Kichton ended up behind the net," said Samson. "I got open on the side of the net and the goalie was kind of swimming in the crease a little bit, so that helped me. It was a huge goal for us, to get the two-goal lead." John Albert had a pair of goals for the IceCaps (42-22-6) while Tyler Beskorowany made 23 saves for the victory. Patrick McNeill replied for the Falcons (44-21-6). Jeremy Smith stopped 28 shots in defeat. Albert opened the scoring for the IceCaps when he picked up a loose puck off a rebound and buried a low wrist shot 4:34 into the first period. Albert added his second, finishing off a 2-on-1 give-and-go with captain Jason Jaffray 15:13 into the second period. McNeill put the Falcons on the board with a point shot that hit off a skate on the way through with 4:33 left in regulation time. St. Johns head coach Keith McCambridge was satisfied with his clubs effort, especially in the defensive zone, just one night after allowing eight goals against in a loss to Springfield. "Were going to have to play a lot better this week," Michigan State Head Coach Tom Izzo said after his team routed Mount St. Marys 98-65 Friday. "What a privilege and an honour to be able to play two of the most winningest programs in the history of the NCAA in Kentucky and North Carolina in a seven-, eight-game stretch." The Spartans (7-0) expect an equally tough challenge as they faced against then-No. 1 Kentucky which resulted in a 78-74 Spartans victory. "Theyre (the Tar Heels) a pretty good team," said Keith Appling who led the Spartans with 17 points off the bench. "Were going to be ready. Were going to need to do all the little things in order to come out with a win. We know how good they are." The Spartans wrapped up another successful early part of the season -- the last time they lost at home in November was to a David Robinson-led Navy team on Nov. 29, 1986. With Fridays victory, Michigan State has won 74 straight games against unranked non-conference opponents at home. Michigan State -- which is off to its best start since opening the 2000-01 season with a 12-0 mark -- did not start Appling, Adreian Payne and Branden Dawson due to showing up late to a required class. "Ive got a lot of jobs in this job, and one of them is to graduate guys and one is to stay accountable," Izzo said. "It was a minor little thing but it was over a class that they needed to be at. They were told that and they decided to try their way, and their way didnt work." It was the first time Appling missed a start at Michigan State since his freshman year. "It was really a wake-up call, lesson learned," Appling said.dddddddddddd "I was just glad that we were able to come out and play the way we did the second half and come out with the win." The Spartans also did not play leading-scorer Gary Harris to rest his ankle that has bothered him since injuring it during the summer. Harris, who averaged 17.7 points, sat on the bench in his warm-ups and is expected to play against North Carolina. The Mountaineers were able to lead twice by one point and kept it close before Michigan States three usual starters entered the game with 14:12 left in the opening half. Michigan State turned up its defence and began running at will in the second half en route to leading by as much as 33 points. The Spartans finished the game hitting 63.1 per cent of its field goals while Mount St. Marys was limited to 32.8 per cent shooting, including only 9 of 32 in the second half. The Barclays Premier League season is officially halfway through. No exaggeration, the season has been great thus far. A more unpredictable Premier League is better viewing. Competition at the top and bottom of the table remains fierce and ever-changing. League leaders Arsenal are on pace for 84 points. Fewer than 84 points has only won the league once in the last decade. The word parity is thrown around, and its not entirely accurate. Top teams are beginning to hit their stride, although every team continues to show flaws, making for a topsy-turvy table. There has been no shortage of talking points through 19 games. Before we get to our mid-season awards, lets go all High Fidelity. Here are the top five storylines at the halfway mark. 5) Methodical Mourinho: You love to love him and love to hate him. Its all more compelling with Jose Mourinho in the Premier League. Inspiring, entertaining football however from has been few and far between from his Chelsea team. Mourinho is Exhibit A in over-managing. His meticulous approach leads to a dull end product more times than not. Chelsea has been clinically stifling at times against top competition, in particular stuffing out matches against Arsenal and Manchester United. Free flowing football has been sacrificed to climb the table. Although its surprising a team with the financial wherewithal and talent of Chelsea need to resort to such mind-numbing tactics at times, Mourinho understands its what needs to be done until he can get his players at the club. Its been a Masterclass job thus far; Mourinhos teams are among the most consistent and competitive week to week. While team performance has been predictable, the notable persona of the Portuguese has not. Mourinho 2.0 has overall been more subdued than his previous tenure. The trademark arrogance and gamesmanship however remain omnipresent. Mourinhos leap into the Stamford Bridge crowd, sitting amongst the supporters after being sent to the stands, and interrupting post-match interviews are few examples the Mourinho of yester year is not far from the surface. As Chelsea close in on the top of the table, Chelseas tactics will become more dry and Mourinhos personality more rebellious. We all win with the latter. 4) Managerial Merry-go-round: Five managers were fired in the 2012/13 season. There have been six casualties already this campaign. Paolo Di Canio (Sunderand), Ian Holloway (Crystal Palace), Martin Jol (Fulham), Steve Clarke (West Brom), Andre Villas-Boas (Tottenham), and Malky Mackay (Cardiff City) are all no longer with their respective sides. The biggest shock has to be AVB. The young Portuguese is now a two-time Premier League failure. Its a massive let-down for a perceived tactically superior young mind in the game not being able to relate with the modern player, isolating individuals within the team and not getting the most out of the players at his disposal. Losing Gareth Bale was a blow for Spurs. But the finances spent and the talent on hand is capable of much more. AVB as a man manager will rightfully be questioned in his next gig. The unlucky loser of the unemployed bunch is Mackay. Playing a public chess match with tumultuous Cardiff City owner Vincent Tan was never going to be a battle won. When an owner operates on an island without rhyme and reason, the environment becomes poisoned and stability goes out the window. Mackay leaves with his head held high, despite his big money swing and a miss of striker Andreas Cornelius. Di Canio gets the nod for most warranted sacking. Who in their right mind would think 11 new players; most of marginal talent, at the Stadium of Light would be a recipe for success? And the audacity to stand before the travelling Sunderland supporters after a 3-0 loss at the Hawthorns provided pictures that will go down in infamy. 3) Golden Gunners: Arsene Wengers demise was widely predicted after a 3-1 home loss to Aston Villa to start the season. After the opening day loss, Arsenal reeled off a streak of 12 straight undefeated in all competitions, signed Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid, and brought Mathieu Flamini back to the Emirates. Meanwhile, talent became realized for Welshman Aaron Ramsey, Olivier Giroud showed his worth as a Premier League talisman and a resurgent backline has developed into one of, if not, the best defensive unit in the league. So much for Wenger losing the plot. Arsenal sits atop the table and on top form despite losing Theo Walcott, Lukas Podolski, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain as long-term absentees. You know things are rolling when goalkeeping is even top notch at the Emirates. The coming of age of goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has provided much needed stability. Is this Arsenal team good enough to be Champions? The starting XI is virtually set. January depth moves can be made up front and at the back. But it will inevitably be up to the current crop. They are a strong group. But are they capable of taking their game to the next level? 2) Sizzling Suarez: Its incredible what can change in a matter of four months. Luis Suarez has gone from a biting, erratic misfit to the most consistent performer and producer in the league. Suarez has more goals than seven Premier League teams, and his 19 are equal to the tally of Fulham. And all this has all come in just 14 games. Incredible. The Uruguayan also has five assists, making it sound bizarre to suggest his stats alone doesnt tell the entire story. He is a true game-breaker in a time where players of that dimension are rare. A constant threat, remarkable touch on the ball and extraordinary movement off it, Suarez has evolved into one of the worlds best. Liverpool has broken the bank to sign Suarez to a new mega contract. Ironically enough, it may be his own influence that determines whether he actually sees that contract out on the Merseyside. Its Champions League or bust. Suarez is key. 1) The noise about Moyes: Its the most talked about story and will continue to be. The start of the David Moyes era at Old Trafford has been shaky at best. But there are signs the team is turning the corner. While still lacking true top end talents en masse, the team as unit is playing much better football. Unfair to Moyes, a transition period within the team hit at the same time as the managerial change. This is no fault of Moyes. And to suggest it could all be remedied in his first transfer window was naïve. That doesnt excuse his panic purchase of Marouane Fellaini or the all too cautious approach in team selection/tactics to open the season. Manchester United is in the midst of a squad evolution. The process will continue in January. The knee-jerk, have-it-now nature of sport demands swift change. Moyes will get blamed or praised for whatever happens in the transfer windows. But this is more of a test to the Glazer ownership. Sponsorship acquisition has come fast and furious. The player side continues to lag behind, not moving in accordance with the clubs commercial growth. In the meantime, United on the field will have to continue to be their scrappy best. Theres something truly likeable about an underdog United team. Its been years since theyve been in such a role. Champions League qualification and lengthy runs in Cup competitions would be seen as a successful year. Next year, the stakes will be much higher. Mid-season Awards Top Player: Suarez (Liverpool) – Honourable mentions to Sergio Aguero, Aaron Ramsey and Wayne Rooney. But Suarez is the clear choice. Manager: Brendan Rodgers (Liverpool) – Year number two at Liverpool has exceeded expectations. The manager bemoans his lack of squad depth, and rightfully so. Yet his team, no matter the change in formation or personnel has managed to play an increasing prominent passing game with the ability to adapt in shape and approach appropriately to the occasion. The man deserves a lot of credit. Belief is back at Anfield. Best Goal: Pajtim Kasami (Fulham) vs. Crystal Palace – An ultimate team goal by Arsenal and Jack Wilshere was trumped later the same weekend by an all-time strike from Kasami. A run on full trot from the middle of the park, controlling with the chest and volley top corner on the run from a ridiculous angle at the top corner of the box wins it. Hands down. End of story. Memorable Moment: Asmir Begovic (Stoke City) goal vs. Southampton – It took just 12 seconds for the goalkeeper to score the shock goal of the season. The story goes it was a windy day, Begovic launched the ball from inside his own box, the ball landed between two Southampton centre-backs, Artur Boruc misjudged the big bounce and embarrassment ensued. Perhaps the most shocking variable was the goal made Begovic joint top goal scorer for Stoke at that time on the season. And the goal was scored in November, Surprise player: Seamus Coleman (Everton) – Roberto Martinez has struck gold with the Irish right back. His defensive play has been standout for one of the most dependable backlines in the league. Coleman has added five goals to his account. Thats more goals than he has scored in his Premier League career, one more than Christian Benteke and just one less than all of Chelseas strikers have scored combined. Surprise team: Hull City – many, including myself pegged the Tigers to go straight back to the League Championship. Instead, Hull sits 10th at the halfway point. They have beat Liverpool and Newcastle, were robbed against Spurs, and gave the two Manchester clubs a scare. This has all come from a team without top talent, a manager with a track record of Premier League failure, and a team garnering more attention for a potential name change than anything on the field. This is the feel good story of the league. Team Performance: Manchester City vs. Manchester United – Its one thing to win by a converted touchdown over Norwich City. Its another thing to run your neighbours and reigning Champions off the field in extraordinary fashion. The 4-1 final flattered United. It was truly a performance for the ages. In the other Group A game, the Czech Republic stunned Canada, 5-4 in a shootout. Dominik Simon scored the deciding goal in the tiebreaker. The United States scored its first three goals on power plays. "Overall, I love to see the power-play goals we were able to get tonight," said U.NEW YORK – The Blue Jays entered Thursdays series finale at Yankee Stadium losers of eight of their last 11 games. Theyd dropped 15 in a row in the Bronx dating back to 2012 and had seen their lead over their pinstriped rivals in the American League East dwindle to two and a half games. This is a slump. Its lasted for about two weeks. The downturn comes on the heels of a terrific May, when Toronto won 21 of 30 games and Edwin Encarnacion captured the imagination of fans with his 16-home run month. This is not is the end of the world, nor does this slump suggest a long-term trend. This is on the offence and thats a good thing because theres too much talent in the Blue Jays lineup for the widespread malaise to continue. To wit: The starting pitching has been fine. You could say its been good and you wouldnt be wrong. In the last 11 games, Jays starters have allowed four or more earned runs only twice and have pitched to a staff ERA of 3.71. The starting pitching was supposed to be the weakness. So far it has held up. The Jays have hit only four home runs in their last 11 games. Not surprisingly, three of the home runs came in two of the three victories. Toronto continues to lead baseball with 93 team home runs, which is crucial to the clubs attack. Of the 338 runs the Jays have scored this season, 147 (43.4 per cent) have come via the long ball. Jose Bautista hasnt hit a home run in 11 games, his longest power drought of the season. Hes still hitting for a respectable average, .275 with five of his 11 hits going for doubles, but the Jays miss his power bat as the club struggles, having scored three or fewer runs eight times in the span. This is a phase, both for the individual and for the ballclub, Bautista said, that was bound to happen. "If you can execute every single day for 162, youd probably win 140 games," said Bautista. "We dont expect to execute every single day. But we do have to pick it up. Its one thing, were running into some St. Louis good pitching, soome other pitching staffs.dddddddddddd I dont want to speak badly or worse about the Yankees or the Orioles but its not the same. We faced much better pitching at home during the last homestand than we have on this road trip, except for Tanaka, who did a tremendous job. So we shouldve won some of these games that we lost." It hasnt helped, either, that Edwin Encarnacion has hit only one home run in the last 11 games. "Weve lacked some timely hitting," said Bautista. "Our pitching has been there enough, I think, that we shouldve won some of these games that weve lost. We just need to keep going on offence. We got really hot at one point and kind of hitting a little cold spurt now. Weve just got to overcome it and not get 10 hits a day but get them when you get the baserunners on." Bautista has repeatedly acknowledged hes bought in to hitting coach Kevin Seitzers philosophy of using all fields. The slugger has become a better all round hitter. His 1,000th career big league hit, achieved in the eighth inning of Wednesday nights loss, was a double to right field. That alone would have been a story last season. This year its commonplace. "I think Im more aware of some situations where people are going to keep challenging me inside, especially when Im behind in the count or theres the right situation when theres a defensive shift," said Bautista. "Why not try to go over there and it ended up working out again? But
The San Diego Padres are apparently not done trading. According to Yahoo! Sports, the Padres are nearing a deal that would send recently acquired catcher Ryan Hanigan to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for third baseman Will Middlebrooks. The Padres picked up Hanigan from Tampa Bay as part of the 11-player deal officially announced Friday that also landed them outfielder Wil Myers. However, San Diego had already added another catcher in Derek Norris from Oakland on Thursday to make Hanigan trade bait. Middlebrooks became expendable in Boston after the Red Sox signed Pablo Sandoval as a free agent earlier this offseason. The Padres were reportedly also in the running for Sandoval. Hanigan hit just .218 in 84 games last season, his first in Tampa Bay after playing the first seven years of his career in Cincinnati. The 34-year-old veteran, who has played more than 100 games in a season just once, is a career. 256 hitter with 25 homers and 172 RBI in 558 games. Middlebrooks was projected to be Bostons future third baseman after a 2012 season in which he batted .288 with 15 homers and 54 RBI in 75 games as a rookie. Moore-Towers and Moscovitchs previous best overall score was 199.50 set in a fourth place finish at the world championships last season. The NBA Finals will resume tonight in a presumably much more comfortable AT&T Center when the San Antonio Spurs welcome the Miami Heat. You can watch the game live on TSN and TSN GO or listen to the action on TSN Radio 1050 at 7:30pm et/4:30pm pt. The Spurs grabbed a 1-0 series lead Thursday night in the sweltering heat of a late spring San Antonio night. Of course, it didnt help that the AT&T Centers air conditioner malfunctioned and didnt work through the course of the game. As temperatures soared into the mid-90s, the Spurs emerged with a 110-95 victory, but the busted AC unit played a major role. LeBron James was forced to leave the game midway through the fourth quarter due to cramping. James has faced cramping issues in the past and the four-time MVP was unable to move Thursday following a layup to get the game within two. "My body just shut down, basically my body said, okay, enough jumping for you for the night. Youve had enough," James said after practice on Friday. "Nothing I could do about it." That didnt stop social media from exploding, questioning James toughness. "I really dont care what people say about me," noted James. The two-time Finals MVP, the Heat, the Spurs and frankly anyone in attendance Sunday night should feel relieved. The AT&T Center staff fixed the problem and it should be very comfortable for Game 2. "It will be fine. Weve been assured of that," said Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra. The extreme conditions played a role in Game 1, but were the same for both squads. When James had to be carried back to the bench, the Spurs finished the game on a 31-9 run with six minutes to go. Danny Green, who set an NBA Finals record with 27 made 3-pointers last year, caught fire late in Game 1. He drained three long balls during the decisive run and finished with 13 points. Tim Duncan contributed 21 points and 10 rebounds, Tony Parker poured in 19 points and handed out eight assists, and Manu Ginobili totaled 16 points and 11 assists for the Spurs, who shot a scorching 14-of-16 from the floor in the fourth, including a perfect 6-of-6 mark from long distance. Tiago Splitter added 14 points and Boris Diaw pulled down 10 rebounds. The Spurs shot 59 percent for the game and 52 percent from long range. "Were not as good as we used to be defensively. So if thats going to diminish, you need to do something at the other end of the floor to make up for it," explained coach Gregg Popovich. "We changed our pace, and the way we approach things at the other end of the floor to make up for what were going to lose defensively. Thats the bottom line." James paced the Heat with 25 points and six assists, while Wade and Bosh supplied 19 and 18 points, respectively, in the setback. "We have to finish the game better, no matter who is on the floor," Wade said, referring to the absence of James. Ray Allen provided a spark off the bench with 16 points, while another veteran, Rashard Lewis, scored 10. The Heat have won 12 straight following a loss in the postseason and theres no reason to panic. Miami lost the first game in each of the last two Finals and went on to win the series. Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Bobby Ryan scored the shootout winner in the Ottawa Senators 3-2 win against the Boston Bruins Saturday. New Senators coach Dave Cameron earned his first win with goals from Mika Zibanejad and David Legwand, along with 29 saves by Robin Lehner. Ottawa has won two of its last three games. Tuukka Rask also made 29 saves, including two in overtime, but it wasnt enough for the Bruins, who have lost five out of their last six. Craig Cunningham scored his first NHL goal, and Loui Eriksson tallied the other Boston goal. Ottawa scored the only third period goal of the game on its power play to even the score at two. Kyle Turris blast from the point caromed off teammate Mark Stone, and Legwand knocked the loose puck into the net to score at 4:17. In overtime with the shootout looming in one minute, each team got a great chance to end the game. Ryans deke-to-backhand shot was stopped by Rask, and the Bruins went the other way on an odd-man rush but didnt score. In the third round of the shootout with the teams tied at one goal each, Lehner made a sprawling save to deny Patrice Bergerons bid, and Ryan beat Rask by going to his forehand for the game-winner. Daves done a good job, said Legwand. We wanted to get that win for him, get that monkey off his back. On the Senators second power play of the first period, it was Boston scoring the first goal of the game. Zdeno Charas clearing attempt took a fortunate bounce off Turris skate into the neutral zone, and Cunningham chased the puck down and fired a slap shot past Lehner for his first NHL goal and the 1-0 lead at 11:45. Z made a good play, kind of chipped it out of the zone, said Cunningham. I think their d-men kind of got a little flat-footed, I took off, buried my head and tried to get it on net. Luckily it went in. The Senators tied the game not even three minutes into the middle period. Mike Hoffmans pass through the neutral zone helped Zibanejad split the Bruins defense, and after faking a slap shot, Zibanejad slid the puck by Rask for the equalizer. Eriksson retook the lead for Boston just past the halfway point of the second period. After spinning away from a defender, he made a beeline to the net, got a pass between an Ottawa defenders legs from Kevan Miller and beat Lehner for his fifth goal of the season. Barcelona, Spain (SportsNetwork.com) - Lionel Messis second-half strike proved to be the difference on Sunday as Barcelona was pushed all the way by Villarreal, but came away with a hard-fought 3-2 victory at the Camp Nou. The Catalan giants entered Sunday riding a wave of excellent form in the midst of a seven-match winning streak across all competitions, but things started poorly in front of the home fans as Villarreal grabbed the opening salvo. With the clock ticking just past 30 minutes the visitors took the lead with a some good fortune as a strike from Mario Gaspar hit the outstretched leg of Denis Cheryshev and wound up in behind Barcelona goalkeeper Claudio Bravo. But the hosts found the equalizer on the stroke of halftime when Rafinha let one go from the right side of the box that forced Villarreal goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo to make a diving stop, but he left a huge rebound and Neymar was in perfect position to smash it home. Villarreal took the lead again in the 52nd minute as a mistake at the back from Gerard Pique allowed Giovani dos Santos to run to the end line on the right flank unimpeded before cutting it back to Luciano Dario Vietto, who fired it home. Falling behind for a second time seemed to bring the quality out of Barcelona as just two minutes later Rafinha made it 2-2 thanks to an exceptional layoff pass from former Liverpool man Luis Suarez. The winning strike came just moments later as again Suarez played provider as he collected the ball at the top of the box and slipped as he slid it over to Messi, who unleashed a beautiful, curling right-footed effort that flew into the corner, leaving Asenjo with no chance for a save. The win sees the Catalans keep pace with rivals Real Madrid, remaining one point behind Los Blancos for the top spot, while Villarreal sits just outside the top-five with 38 points. Also in La Liga on Sunday, Aritz Aduriz scored on either side of the intermission as Athletic Bilbao claimed a 2-0 win over bottom-of-the-table Levante, while Edgar Antonio Mendezs strike just before the intermission proved decisive as Almeria took all three points with a 1-0 win over Getafe. Elsewhere, Sevilla came from behind early to claim three points with an exciting 3-2 victory over Espanyol at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan. The hosts fell behind when Cristian Stuani dispatched a penalty in the 16th minute, but Diogo Figueiras netted an equalizer for Sevilla three minutes before the half-hour mark. Vitolo struck in the 36th minute to give Sevilla the lead, and the hosts then found themselves playing with an extra man after Espanyols Francisco Casilla was shown a straight red card by referee Jose Luis Gonzalez just before the break. Despite playing at a disadvantage, Espanyol found a equalizer with 12 minutes to play through Victor Sanchez Mata and it looked it would be winner, but Iago Aspas buried the winner at the death for his first league goal in a Sevilla shirt. The Canucks needed a proven netminder after trading Cory Schneider and Roberto Luongo in the past 13 months and missing the playoffs this season. Miller was seen as the best goalie on the free-agent market. "I felt it was important to get a goalie with experience," said Canucks general manager Jim Benning. "Over the years hes played a lot of games. He gives us that experience that we need." Benning is familiar with the 33-year-old Miller, having worked in Buffalos scouting department when the Sabres drafted the player in 1999. "Hes intense and focused," said Benning. "Our younger players are going to see the way he works in practice, how hard be practises. Its going to make them better players." The St. Louis Blues acquired Miller from Buffalo in February, hoping he could lead them deep into the playoffs. But the club was eliminated by the Blackhawks in the first round after Miller allowed 19 goals and posted a lacklustre .897 save percentage. He posted a 25-30-4 record with a 2.64 goals-against average and .918 save percentage this season. He has 2994 wins, a 2.dddddddddddd.59 GAA with a .915 save percentage in 559 career NHL games. Despite his experience, Miller said he always sees himself as a work in progress. "I think Im still developing into the best player I can be," he said. "I take that part of hockey seriously, finding new things to add my game and taking consideration and coaching from other people." Miller said he has a fondness for Vancouver, especially after playing for the U.S. during the 2010 Winter Games. Sidney Crosby scored on Miller in overtime to lead Canada to victory in the Olympic gold-medal game at Rogers Arena. "Ive had a chance to experience Vancouver over the years and have always been blown away by the amount of support the fans the fans bring out and how great the crowds have been, also how kind the people have treated me over the years, especially during the Olympics," he said. "Its a great city for hockey, a great city to live in," he added. Benning has been busy over the past few days after trading for
TORONTO -- Dion Phaneuf admits he made a mistake. The Toronto captain said Thursday he erred in not talking to reporters following the Maple Leafs 5-3 home loss Tuesday night to the St. Louis Blues. Phaneuf was widely criticized for blowing off the media following the clubs sixth straight loss that dropped it to 10th in the Eastern Conference standings. "I shouldve been available, thats about all Im going to say about it," the veteran defenceman said following Thursdays practice. "I cant remember the last time I didnt make myself available but I shouldve been available." On Wednesday, a day off for the Leafs, Phaneuf told a Toronto all-sports radio station he didnt talk because he was too emotional following the loss. "I just didnt play well enough," he said. "Bottom line, I wasnt even close to the level I have to play at. "I accept responsibility for that. I will be better." Phaneuf and his teammates dont have time to fret about their respective situations. Toronto visits the Philadelphia Flyers on Friday night in one of just eight regular-season games remaining for the Leafs. The contest is important for both teams. Philadelphia (38-37-7, 83 points) is sixth in the Eastern Conference heading into action Thursday night. Toronto (36-30-8, 80 points) is tied in points with Columbus, Detroit and Washington, but all three clubs having games in hand on the Leafs. With each mounting loss, the Leafs find themselves increasingly under the media microscope in Toronto. There was no shortage of TV cameras and media at Thursdays practice. "If you look back two weeks ago we werent having to answer these questions, but the reality is were where were at right now," Phaneuf said. "We havent won in six games and when you dont win hockey games there are questions asked and theres every right to ask those questions because its our job to win games. "Im not going to stand here and say weve played well, we havent. I know right now it seems were at a low point but well come through it." And for head coach Randy Carlyle, the turnaround wont come about by continually harping on how tight the Leafs have played during the streak. "The more you talk about it, the more you focus on the tightness the harder it is to flush," he said. "We have to be prepared to look at the positives that are in the hockey game, the things weve done well and not focus on the negatives. "Pressure comes from within, comes from outside, it comes from everywhere. I think the amount of pressure you put on yourself to perform is really and truly who you have to answer to." But Carlyle didnt sugar-coat Torontos current situation, either. "We feel theres a lot of areas in which there are some positives but you cant look past weve lost six in a row," he said. "Bottom line, theres no other way to say it. "We cant feel good about ourselves but we have to prepare ourselves to play the best game of the year (Friday)." Toronto could have defenceman Paul Ranger back Friday. Ranger left a 5-3 home loss to Tampa Bay on March 19 on a stretcher with a neck brace after being hit by Lightning forward Alex Killorn. "I feel pretty good but Ive got to talk to the trainers and doctors and see if they can clear me to play," Ranger said. "I think its just a combined decision (Friday). "If I can help in any way Im going to and I plan on it. I had some encouraging words from teammates and trainers saying, We could use you back. It felt pretty good. Im excited to get back into a game and contribute as much as I can." Carlyle would consider playing Ranger in Philadelphia if the defenceman was cleared medically. "He looked good (Thursday)," Carlyle said. "As soon as the player tells us, then we have an option." Toronto has been plagued by poor starts over its losing streak, something Carlyle says gives the opposition an advantage. "It seems like were chasing the game and when you chase the game you have to open up and that gives the team youre playing against more opportunities," he said. "Its tough enough when youre on an even keel . . . especially at this time of year. "The bottom line is we have to find a way to start better and continue it." Forward Phil Kessel agreed. "It helps to get the first goal," he said. "Youre up one instead of being down one or down two. "Its tough to come back in this league." Given the intense media glare in Toronto, forward Nazem Kadri said its hard for the Leafs not to feel pressure to win. "When you drop six straight its definitely hard to focus on other things," he said. "Weve had some meetings and understand this is desperation time. "We have to play for our lives so we have to go start acting like it." Defenceman Cody Franson said the Leafs psyche remains solid. "I think were in a good spot," he said. "Obviously weve been through a tough stretch here but . . . were very aware of our situation and we all want to do the right things to get this back on the right foot. "Were aware of what we have to do. We dont feel sorry for ourselves, weve played well in a lot of games and done a lot of good things and were going to build on that." Toronto returns to the Air Canada Centre on Saturday versus Detroit, the first of four straight home games. After facing Calgary (Tuesday), Boston (Thursday) and Winnipeg (April 5), the Leafs will end the regular season with road games against Tampa, Florida and Ottawa. "Its not like were out of a playoff position," defenceman Jake Gardiner said. "Were in a decent spot, we can still compete for those last two spots and just see what happens. "Yeah, theres always that pressure . . . but we know we have a good team in here and we know we can do it. Its just a matter of playing the way we know we can." Texans Jerseys China . The teams were taken off the field after 43 minutes with the score 1-1, and Algeria coach Vahid Halilhodzic went to the centre circle to broadcast an appeal for fans to stop throwing lit flares and bottles. Referee Nikolaj Haeni of Switzerland brought players back after a 15-minute break to play the final two minutes of the first half, then immediately changed ends to start the second period. When El Arabi Soudani scored the decisive goal in the 66th minute, around 15 fans ran on the pitch from three sides of the Stade de Geneve. Nabil Bentaleb had put Algeria ahead in the 21st minute after a handling error by Romania goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon, and Alexandru Chipciu levelled in the 28th. "The result is very satisfying. The team is progressing on all levels," said Halilhodzic, adding he was "a bit disappointed with the behaviour of our supporters." The final whistle brought around 1,000 of the 15,600 spectators on to the field. Many dispersed when water sprinklers were turned on, though some continued to clash with stewards in one corner of the pitch. Algeria opens against Group H favourite Belgium on June 17 in Belo Horizonte.dddddddddddd It then plays South Korea in Porto Alegre and Russia in Curitiba. Despite events in the stands, Algeria made a good impression on the field. Abdelmoumene Djabou and Bentaleb gave Romania right-back Vlad Chiriches, Bentalebs Tottenham teammate, a tough time and Algerias best moves flowed there. Sofiane Feghouli twice wasted clear shooting chances in the 17th minute, before Algeria led when Manchester City keeper Pantilimon spilled Djabous cross. Bentaleb and Feghouli converged on the loose ball which looped into the empty goal. The goal sparked a firework display around the stadium with at least 15 flares burning in the stands. Romania levelled seven minutes later when Alexandru Chipciu beat the offside line, rounded goalkeeper Rais MBolhi who had charged out of his penalty area, and rolled the ball into an unguarded goal. Fan trouble resumed in the second period when an Algerian supporter encroached on the pitch in the 57th as his team prepared to take a corner. A mini-pitch invasion followed Algeria retaking the lead in the 66th when El Arabi Soudani connected with Saphir Taiders pass from the right side of the penalty area.

He posted a 14-game point streak from Nov. 15-Dec. 15 (six goals, 11 assists). Getzlaf also set a career high with seven game-winning goals and recorded a plus-28 defensive rating. The 28-year-old Regina native is a Hart Trophy finalist for the first time. Giannis Antetokounmpo had 13 points, eight rebounds and four assists, and Parker added 11 points and seven boards for Milwaukee, which held the Wolves to 38 per cent shooting and turned 19 turnovers into 20 points.I thought defensively, Larry, everyone that was one the floor was at a very high level, Kidd said.Wiggins had 14 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two blocks for the Wolves, who had just 10 healthy players and third-stringer LaVine was their only available point guard. Corey Brewer added 19 points.Weve got a lot of guys playing roles their not accustomed to playing, Wolves coach Flip Saudners said. The future of the league was on display on Wednesday night with each team starting two 19-year-olds — Wiggins and LaVine for Minnesota and Parker and Antetokounmpo for Milwaukee. Its the first time in NBA history that four teenagers have played in the same game, let alone started. All eyes were on Wiggins and Parker, the top two picks in the draft. Wiggins was drafted by Cleveland ahead of Parker, but was traded to Minnesota in the package that brought All-Star Kevin Love to the Cavaliers. Both players have impressed early with their willingness to assimilate to the team concept as opposed trying to dominate the ball and take the bulk of the shots. They rarely met eye-to-eye on Wednesday but Wiggins did swat Parkers layup attempt iin the third quarter, bringing the crowd to its feet.ddddddddddddThaddeus Young made his return to the lineup for the Wolves after missing the past five games to mourn the death of his mother. Young missed his first eight shots and finished with three points on 1-for-10 shooting. Mo Williams, who has been starting for injured point guard Ricky Rubio, missed the game with an illness. With 6-foot-7 Robbie Hummel forced to play centre on the second unit, the Bucks went hard to the rim in the fourth quarter to pull away. Sanders and Parker each turned dunks into three-point plays after getting fouled by the overmatch Hummel for an 84-78 lead and they never looked back.Defensively we were able to get stops, really put some pressure on them and force some turnovers, said Knight, who had three steals. Thats what I was (most) proud of.TIP INSBucks: Knight was given a Flagrant-1 for a hard foul on a breakaway by Gorgui Dieng. ... Hall died on Nov. 13 after an 18-month battle with the disease. ... The Wolves started their seventh different lineup in the last seven games.WE KNOW BETTERThere was considerable debate as to who belonged in that first spot in the draft, Wiggins or Parker. Both downplayed the individual portion of the game, but LaVine, who was the 13th pick, knew better. How highly touted they were in high school, even in grade school coming up. They were both No. 1, No. 2 and just switching on and off their whole careers, LaVine said earlier this week. I feel like it might be like that even (in the NBA) because theyre just going to be going at each other.QUOTE OF THE NIGHTParker, when asked if he stays in touch with Wiggins during the season: Its a long-distance relationship. I dont believe in those.UP NEXTBucks: Visit Detroit on Friday.Timberwolves: Visit Los Angeles Lakers on Friday. ' '
HOUSTON -- Robinson Cano had wondered what would happen if rookie James Jones started getting on base consistently for the Seattle Mariners. His suspicions were confirmed Tuesday night. Cano and Kyle Seager had three RBIs apiece, Jones added two more and a seven-run sixth inning propelled the Mariners to score a season high in a 13-2 win over the Houston Astros, giving Seattle its second straight game scoring in double digits. Cano drove in two runs to give Seattle the lead in the first and hit the first of the five doubles in the sixth inning that tied a franchise mark and pushed the lead to 10-1. Jones three hits included a triple. The rookie, who hits in front of Cano, has seven hits in the first two games of this series. The Mariners won the opener 10-4. "I was telling Howard (Johnson), the hitting coach: Weve been winning games and hes not getting on base," Cano said. "Watch how many runs were going to score when he starts getting on base. And look what happened the last two days." Manager Lloyd McClendon has been impressed with the Jones progress. "Hes getting a lot of big hits for us, hes hitting left-handers, hes running the bases well," McClendon said. "Ive been very pleased. He continues to get better every day." Hisashi Iwakuma (6-4) went six innings, giving up a run on seven hits while striking out seven as the Mariners improved to eight games over .500 for the first time since the end of the 2009 season. Seager doubled and hit a solo homer in the ninth as the Mariners also set a season-high with 18 hits. Jarred Cosart (8-6) tied a season-high by allowing six runs on nine hits with four walks in 5 2-3 innings to end a four-game winning streak. "A lot of pitches up in the zone," manager Bo Porter said. "When he was on the streak that he was on, he was really finishing his breaking ball and inducing weak contact, but today, there were just a lot of pitches up in the zone." Darin Downs relieved Cosart and allowed five consecutive hits, with four doubles. All of the Mariners runs in the sixth came with two outs to mark the first time theyve had six straight run-scoring hits with two outs in an inning in franchise history, according to STATS. Its also the first time theyve scored at least 10 runs in consecutive games since June 19-20, 2012. Jose Altuve had two hits for his MLB-leading 36th multihit game and Matt Dominguez drove in a run for Houston. Jones singled in his first two at-bats to give him a hit in six straight plate appearances. He had an RBI in the second and his second one in the seventh made it 11-1. Domingo Santana, Houstons eighth-rated prospect by Baseball America, went 0 for 4 in his major league debut after being called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Monday. Santana reached on an error in the seventh inning and scored on a ground-rule double by fellow rookie Kike Hernandez. Santana is the last of the players from the 2011 trade with the Phillies for Hunter Pence to reach the majors, joining Cosart, Jon Singleton and Josh Zeid. Cano hit a two-run double with two outs in the sixth inning to chase Cosart and push the lead to 5-1. Downs came in and was greeted with three straight doubles: by Seager, Logan Morrison and Mike Zunino to score three more. Michael Saunders followed with a run-scoring single before Dustin Ackley doubled off the left field wall to extend the lead to 10-1. Endy Chavez drew a leadoff walk before consecutive singles by Jones and Cano made it 1-0 in the first. Jones scored on a groundout by Seager to make it 2-0. Altuve and Presley singled in the first for Houston before Dominguez cut the lead to 2-1 with his two-out single to centre field. Ackley snapped an 0-for-21 skid with a single with one out in the second and scored on a single by Jones to make it 3-1. Ackley tied a season-high with three hits. Hernandez, who was called up from Oklahoma City on Tuesday, made his major league debut when he entered the game at second base in the seventh inning and finished with two hits. NOTES: The series wraps up Wednesday when Seattles Chris Young opposes Brad Peacock. ... The Astros on Tuesday signed OF Derek Fisher, who was the 37th overall pick in the draft. ... The three Indians who qualified for the games will compete as "independent" athletes, rather than represent their country, after their national body failed to schedule elections before the start of the Olympics on Feb. 7. The Indian Olympic Association was suspended by the IOC in December 2012 for electing tainted officials, notably secretary-general Lalit Bhanot, who spent more than 10 months in jail on corruption charges related to the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi. The International Olympic Committee said last month it would lift the suspension once new elections are held. The Indians have set their general assembly for Feb. 9, two days after the opening of the Sochi Olympics. "Following the executive board decision in December, the IOC is considering all necessary arrangements for the Indian athletes who have qualified for the Sochi Games to take part as Independent Olympic Participants under the Olympic flag," the IOC said in a stattement on Thursday.dddddddddddd The trio includes Shiva Kesavan, a 32-year-old luger who will be appearing in his fifth Winter Games. Kesavan told Indian media that not being able to compete under the national flag was "shameful and pathetic." "It is a sad and embarrassing situation that Indian sport has been put in," he said. "People around the world know about the failure of our systems and about corruption and bad governance in sports." Under pressure from the IOC, the Indian body amended its constitution last month to ban corruption-tainted officials from running for election. Had India not complied, it would have become the first country expelled from the Olympics since South Africa was kicked out more than 40 years ago. The IOC has made provisions for athletes to compete under the Olympic flag at previous games. Athletes from the former Netherlands Antilles and marathon runner Guor Marial of South Sudan competed as independents at the 2012 London Olympics. Athletes from East Timor marched under the Olympic flag at the 2000 Sydney Games.
Columbus, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - The body of missing Ohio State football player Kosta Karageorge was found Sunday near campus, police said. The Columbus police department said Karageorge, who was reported missing on Wednesday, was found in a dumpster not far from his apartment where he was last seen. Police said the preliminary investigation shows the walk-on senior defensive lineman died from what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A gun was recovered at the scene, police said. Karageorge, who was 22, missed practice after disappearing and had not been seen since leaving his apartment in dark clothing at 2 a.m. on Wednesday. His sister told The Columbus Dispatch that his roommates said he was leaving to take a walk. He had some extenuating circumstances that night that lead us to believe he was upset, Sophia Karageorge told the paper. She said her brother, a former wrestler, had a history of sport-related concussions and that the family was very concerned that hes not himself and that he maybe doesnt know whats going on. MILAN, Italy -- Antonio Cassano scored his 100th Serie A goal as Parma salvaged a 1-1 draw against 10-man Bologna on Saturday. Bologna took the lead in the Emilia-Romagna derby in the 10th minute when Panagiotis Kone latched onto Rolando Bianchis ball over the defence and fired it past Antonio Mirante from 25 metres. Cassanos strike was even more spectacular as the forward volleyed an unstoppable effort into the top left corner. Bologna played almost the entire second half with 10 men after Frederik Sorensen was sent off following a second booking in the 52nd. Bologna almost snatched all three points when Kone curled a free kick just wide of the left upright nine minutes from time. Genoa and Torino also played out a 1-1 draw in an entertaining match at Stadio Luigi Ferraris.
